Old Southendian & Southchurch V Walthamstow (Cricket)

The Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Three, Saturday 27th June 2015

Toss won by Walthamstow who chose to bat

Walthamstow 314/9 (50 overs)
Old Southendian & Southchurch 234 (42 overs)
Walthamstow won by 80 runs

It was a lovely summers day in Southend-on-Sea so I whacked on the factor 15, put on my cap, and headed over to Southchurch Park for some Essex League Cricket as Old Southendian & Southchurch hosted Walthamstow. I was hoping they would have more luck than they did the last time I visited two weeks ago when they lost having conceded 300 runs in their bowling innings.

The toss saw Walthamstow win it and choose to bat on what seemed to be ideal batting conditions so the decision wasn't surprising at all.  As the boys came out to field Chris Bunce asked me to take a photo of him with his two sons.  They were all playing in the first team together for the first time so here is that photo of Chris with his two sons Michael and James which I'm sure was a proud moment for them and their family

After all those pre match things were out of the way we got on with the game and it seemed that Walthamstow's decision to bat first looked to be backfiring somewhat as they lost a wicket in the first over and then were four down inside the first fifteen overs of their innings thanks to some decent bowling from the hosts.

The visitors managed a recovery of sorts to get to 111/4 at the half way stage but then lost two more wickets to see themselves 159/6 with eighteen overs left so looked likely to struggle to make a par score on this pitch.  However some amazing lower order hitting, albeit with some luck along the way, saw them almost double their score as the hosts wilted in the field and Walthamstow posted a formidable 314/9 in their 50 overs.

I couldn't believe it.  Even Chris and some of the players said to me I was a jinx as both times I had come to watch them they had conceded over 300!!  I could see their point but the hosts had a monumental task of chasing 315 down to win this game.  But this is sport so you never know what can happen.

After I had popped to the seafront for some chicken nuggets and chips I popped back just as the hosts were beginning their charge in pursuit of the enormous total set by Walthamstow and things didn't start well as they lost an early wicket to find themselves on 26/1 after five overs.  Things went from bad to worse as they lost more wickets and half way through their innings were 133/5 although this was better than what the visitors were at the same stage.

The hosts moved onto 202/7 with fifteen overs left needing another 113 from 90 balls which in T20 format would be fairly easy by all accounts.  The problem Old Southendian had was they only had three wickets in hand so this made the task more difficult.  Sadly for the hosts they found it too difficult and were bowled out for 234 at the end of the 42nd over, the final wicket being a terrible run out off what was the seventh ball of the over as the umpire had miscounted the number of ball bowled, kinda summing up the hosts luck.

So a decent win for the East London boys.  Chris did get me a beer in the bar afterwards so maybe they will let me come back again!!!  An enjoyable day in the sun watching cricket though and hopefully Old Southendian & Southchurch can win the next time I see them play, hopefully.

The FA Futsal Cup Finals Day One - Group Stages (Futsal)

Copper Box Arena, Saturday 20th June 2015

So today I made my way to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.  The reason.....well here is an explanation:-

This season sees the return of The FA Futsal Cup, pitching local grassroots teams against the best clubs in the country for the opportunity to be crowned national Cup champions at the iconic Copper Box Arena in London.

The National Finals will be held over the weekend of 20 and 21 June, and will be an atmospheric demonstration of Futsal with an assortment of the best male and female teams in the country competing for the Cup.

Over 600 teams have competed in the qualifying stages to win the right to challenge for the FA Futsal Cup and with 20 privileged finalists getting the opportunity to test their skills over two days of tough competition to be crowned Male and Female cup winners.

Well I'd never seen Futsal before and I'd also never been to the Copper Box Arena either so I thought why not and headed over for my Saturday afternoon/evening's entertainment, and with it being free entry on the Saturday as well it was even more of a reason to take advantage!!!

After a fairly long ish walk from Stratford Stadion to the Copper Box arena through the Olympic Park I took my seat and sat down for a feast of Futsal.  Here is how the Group Stages went:-

Group A (Mens)
London Zappsport 6-2 Birmingham Tigers
Manchester 5-1 FC Salisbury United
Birmingham Tigers 6-6 FC Salisbury United
London Zappsport 2-7 Manchester

So Manchester win all three games to qualify for Sunday's Semi Finals

Group B (Mens)

Helvecia, whose Chairman Nurul Hoque also is the Chairman of ESL side Tower Hamlets, squeezed through as group winners after their opening defeat.  Genesis, who come from Newham, qualified as best runners up and Birmingham missed out on goal difference which is agonising for them.

Group C (Mens)

4.Fourstar         3 0 0 3 6 13 -7 0

Baku United, the only professional side in the competition, qualified for the Semis as group winners.  The London outfit, whose players earn a reported £5,000 a week, breezed through their opening two games before being made to work hard against a spirited Oxford side in their last game.

Group D (Womens)

11.30am - Womens Semi Final Two University Of Gloucs Vs Loughborough
12.30pm - Mens Semi Final One Manchester Vs Genesis
1.30pm -   Mens Semi Final Two Helvecia Vs Baku United

That is then followed by the Womens Final at 3pm and then the Mens Final at 4.30pm to round off the tournament.

Should be a decent day in store if today is anything to go by.  Futsal is a thoroughly enjoyable sport to watch and no doubt participate in too and I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to go and give it a watch as its end to end action for the duration I can tell you!!!

So a thoroughly enjoyable day and as I walked back through the Olympic Park and once again was amazed by its sheer size and beauty.  Us Brit's should be thoroughly proud of this place.
