Essex V Surrey (Cricket)

NatWest T20 Blast, Saturday 16 May 2015 at Chelmsford

Essex won the toss and chose to field

Surrey 205/5 (20 overs) - Davies 53; Smith 1-21
Essex 161 (20 overs) - Smith 44; Curran 4-35)
Surrey won by 44 runs

Surrey cruised to a 44 run win over Essex at the County Ground in Chelmsford after putting in a decent all round display.  Essex won the toss and put their opponents into bat on a decent track in the Essex sunshine and after losing Roy to a run out early on Davies and Sangakkara put on 80 in quick time to give the visitors a platform to build a decent total. Wilson and Ansari kept the momentum going as Essex struggled with the ball and Surrey posted 205/5 in their 20 overs. The hosts scored 11 in their first over but then lost two quick wickets to find themselves 14/2 and although Smith and Velani put on 71 for the third wicket they were always behind the required rate and as this climbed the hosts began to lose wickets regularly to find themselves on 118/6. Despite ten Doeschate's 40 off 19 balls at the end Essex never threatened to overhaul Surrey's total and were bowled out for 161 with Surrey's Curran taking 4-35. Surrey were better in all departments today and bounce back from their opening night's defeat against Glamorgan whilst Essex now have two defeats from two games and will need to pick up a win very soon if they are to do anything in this tournament for 2015.
